Accounting Pernille

Pernille started with a beginner’s software accounting course and is now working and studying to become an accountant.

I did a course called Software Accounting more specifically Sage 50. It was run by The Training Place of Excellence and took place in Eltham Library at the Eltham Centre. I sat an exam which I passed and after that they gave me an opportunity to do some work experience using the software on past accounts but which would have been live at one point. So, just to, actually put the knowledge I acquired into practice. It was a little bit difficult to manage because I have a seven-year old son who I had to send to breakfast club and after school club.

Then, I thought, how should I proceed with these accounting qualifications because I found out I was quite good at it. I wanted to sign up for another course, but before I could do that, they contacted me from the Training Place of Excellence and said ‘Would you like to do an apprenticeship?’ to study for the AAT Level 2 in Accounting plus work as an Accounts Assistant in their accounting practice and training school. So this is what I am doing now.

I am going to complete the apprenticeship which will take 5 years altogether. And at the end of that I will be a fully qualified account. It’s going to be challenging, and it’s quite hard to balance studying and working and looking after your home, your child and everything else, but I am sure I will manage.

I would definitely recommend the course because it gives you real work experience. So if you can’t get, for example, an unpaid work placement, you can go and do the course, you will get an insight into what exactly the work of an accountant or a bookkeeper entails.
