Using a commercial sewing pattern

Learn to use a sewing pattern for making your own clothes!

Are you looking to increase your sewing skills by learning how to make your own clothes? Ever wondered how to interpret a dress-making pattern or sew your own garments from scratch?
Here by popular demand is a follow-up to our beginners’ sewing classes. During this five-week course you will: learn how to read a commercial sewing pattern; understand techniques for creating your own basic pattern; make a simple pattern for a top or dress and construct a garment using it.

Have you completed one of our beginners’ sewing classes? Are you ready to take your sewing skills to the next level and learn how to make your own clothes?
During this five-week course, our tutor Mary Jane Baxter will show you how to use a commercial sewing pattern to create your own pair of drawstring trousers/pyjama bottoms. You’ll learn how to measure your body accurately, choose the right size, select suitable fabric and interpret all the signs and symbols so that you’ll feel confident about creating your own garment using a commercial paper pattern. Learners will all use the same pattern, so that everyone can support each other during the process.

NB: You must purchase your own pattern and fabric in order to take part in this class, and learners will also need to bring a basic sewing kit of fabric scissors, pins, thread, needles, and a fabric marking pen with them to each session.

Please note we now require a £10.00 deposit which is refunded on completion of the course and on request. If this is a problem, please contact: learning@gcda.org.uk.
Please bring your proof of ID & NI number to the first session of the course, as an enrolment form needs to be completed.
Once you have registered you have agreed to our terms & conditions.
This course will be taught by Mary Jane Baxter, the author of three books on sewing and making.

NB: This is NOT a course for complete beginners. You MUST be confident using a sewing machine and/or have attended one of GCDA’s sewing courses.
You must also be prepared to bring your own fabric for Week 2 (suitable fabric types will be discussed during Week 1), as well as a sewing kit including sharp dressmaking scissors, needles, pins, thread and tailor’s chalk.

Sewing machines are provided.

It is essential that you attend the first session, and commit to all sessions, if you are unable, please email: learning@gcda.org.uk . Please be on time.
